Getting Started with Self-Compassion

Self-Compassion is a research-backed app for people who recognize they need to be kinder to themselves — but don't know where to start. Most people struggling with self-criticism have read about self-compassion or heard it recommended by a therapist, yet no dedicated standalone tool existed to practice it daily. This app fills that gap, offering structured exercises rooted in Dr. Kristin Neff's research on self-compassion as a learnable, practice-based skill.

The Three Pillars

The app is organized around Dr. Neff's three-component framework for self-compassion:

  • Self-Kindness: Treating yourself with the same warmth you would offer a good friend, rather than harsh self-judgment.
  • Common Humanity: Recognizing that suffering and personal failure are part of the shared human experience — you are not alone.
  • Mindfulness: Holding painful thoughts and feelings in balanced awareness, without over-identifying with them or pushing them away.

Every practice in the app maps to one or more of these pillars. Over time, you'll recognize which pillar feels most natural and which needs the most attention.

First Launch

When you open the app for the first time, you'll move through a brief three-screen onboarding:

  1. Welcome screen: Introduces the app's purpose and the idea that self-compassion is a skill — not a personality trait — that anyone can develop.
  2. The three pillars: A visual overview of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness, with a short explanation of how they work together.
  3. Self-help disclaimer: A one-time acknowledgment that this app is a self-help tool for personal growth. It is not a substitute for professional mental health care. Tap "I Understand" to continue.

After onboarding, tap Start Your First Practice to land on the Home screen. No account is required to begin.

Key Screens

Home Tab

Your daily starting point. The prominent Compassion Break button offers immediate access to a quick 3-step guided practice you can complete in under two minutes. Below it, your daily practice suggestion and recent activity give you context for where you are in your journey.

Practice Tab

The full practice library, organized by pillar (Self-Kindness, Common Humanity, Mindfulness) and filterable by duration. Each practice includes a description and estimated completion time so you can choose what fits your moment. Completed practices are logged automatically.

Journal Tab

The Compassion Journal is where you bring self-critical thoughts to meet the three pillars. Write about something you're struggling with, and the app guides you through a structured reframing — noticing what you're feeling, recognizing your common humanity, and offering yourself kind words. Entries are saved privately on your device (or synced with Plus).

Progress Tab

Track your growth over time. See your mood trends after practices, your current practice streak, and visual patterns that show which pillars you're working with most. Mood data is collected with a brief check-in after each practice.

Settings Tab

Manage daily practice reminders, sign-in options, subscription status, and app preferences.

Free Tier

The free tier of Self-Compassion is fully functional for core practice. All Compassion Breaks, a curated selection of guided exercises from each pillar, the Compassion Journal, mood tracking, and streaks are available without a subscription. Banner ads appear on free accounts.

No account is required for basic use. Your data stays on your device until you choose to sign in and enable sync.

A Note on How to Use It

Self-compassion develops through repetition, not just understanding. The most effective use of this app is small and consistent: one Compassion Break in the morning, a journal entry when your inner critic gets loud, and a check-in on your mood before you put your phone down. The app is built to support that rhythm — not to be another thing you have to power through.

Start with the Compassion Break on your first day. Everything else follows naturally from there.
