Getting Started with Unsolicited Advice
Unsolicited Advice is a topic-organized platform built for two groups: people who have hard-earned wisdom to share, and people who want to learn from others' mistakes before making them. On every other platform, posting unsolicited advice gets you called rude. Here, it's the entire point.
What the App Does
- Advice organized by life topic — browse Career, Finance, Relationships, Health, Parenting, Personal Growth, Home/DIY, and more. Every piece of advice is tagged so you find what matters to you
- Personal stories behind the advice — every advice post can have multiple personal stories attached, explaining why the advice matters through real-world experience. This is what makes the platform unique: advice backed by lived experience, not opinion
- Community voting — upvote advice that's genuinely useful, downvote what isn't. The first-time voting tooltip explains the spirit: vote on whether advice has value, not whether you personally agree
- Save and organize — bookmark advice for later reference and organize saved items into named collections
First Launch and Self-Selection
When you open the app for the first time, you'll see a single self-selection screen:
"This is a community for people who believe unsolicited advice has value. If that's you, welcome."
Tap This is for me to continue. Tap Not for me if this isn't your kind of community. The app is honest about what it is and self-selects for the right audience from the start.
After the self-selection screen, you land directly on the Home feed. An anonymous session is created silently — no account required to browse, vote, or bookmark.
Finding Advice
Browse by topic: Tap the Topics tab to see all topic categories with advice counts. Tap any topic to open its feed. Sort by most-voted (default), newest, or most stories.
Search: Use the search bar on Home or Topics to find advice on a specific subject. Results appear as you type and work offline against your locally-cached data.
Filter: Open the filter panel to combine topic, sort order, and time period (all time / this month / this week / this year). Active filters appear as chips below the search bar.
Posting Advice
Posting requires a free account. Tap the Post tab — if you're anonymous, you'll be prompted to create an account via Google, Apple, or email magic link. Your browsing history is preserved during the account upgrade with zero data loss.
When posting:
- Write your advice as a clear, direct title (up to 200 characters — the core advice itself)
- Add body text with context, explanation, or nuance (up to 2,000 characters, optional)
- Select 1–3 topic tags from the predefined list
- Tap Preview to review, then Submit
Adding Your Story to Someone's Advice
See advice that matches something you've lived through? Tap Add Your Story on any advice detail screen. Write your personal narrative — what happened when you ignored the advice, how you saw someone else learn it the hard way, or any experience that shows why it matters. Stories are limited to 3,000 characters. You can add one story per advice post and edit it later.
