How to Complete Onboarding

Who this is for: Anyone opening Self-Compassion for the first time and wanting to understand what each onboarding screen means before moving forward.

Priya is a software engineer in her early 30s who downloaded the app after reading a Kristin Neff article. She reads every screen carefully before tapping — she wants to understand what she's getting into before committing to a practice.

Steps

  1. Open the app for the first time. The welcome screen appears with the app's mission statement: that self-compassion is a learnable skill, not a fixed personality trait, and that this app provides structured tools to practice it.

  2. Read the welcome screen. Take your time — there is no timer. The screen introduces the idea that many people know they should be kinder to themselves but lack a structured way to practice it. Tap Next when ready.

  3. View the three pillars screen. This screen presents a visual overview of the three pillars of self-compassion: Self-Kindness, Common Humanity, and Mindfulness. Each pillar includes a brief definition. This is the conceptual foundation of everything in the app. Tap Next.

  4. Read and accept the self-help disclaimer. The app displays a one-time disclaimer: Self-Compassion is a self-help tool for personal growth and skill-building. It is not a clinical tool and is not a substitute for professional mental health care. This appears once, at first launch. Tap I Understand to proceed.

  5. Tap "Start Your First Practice". The onboarding ends and you land on the Home screen. The Compassion Break button is prominently displayed — this is your starting point.

Expected Outcome

You are on the Home screen with the Compassion Break button visible and accessible. No account has been created. No data has been entered. The app is ready to use immediately.

Notes

  • Onboarding cannot be skipped on first launch — the disclaimer must be acknowledged once.
  • If you close the app during onboarding and reopen it, the app resumes at the screen you were on.
  • The three-pillar overview is available later in the app under Settings > About Self-Compassion — you do not need to memorize it on first launch.
  • No account is required. The app works fully in an anonymous local session until you choose to sign in.
