Getting Started with Vocabulary

The Vocabulary Expansion App is a daily practice system for adults who want to communicate with greater precision. Instead of picking up new words incidentally, you learn through thematic word clusters — groups of related words with definitions, usage examples, and nuance notes that explain exactly when to use each one over its near-synonyms.

What the App Does

  • Word clusters by theme — learn 5–8 related words at a time, organized into domains like Emotions, Work, Social, Descriptions, Academic, and Daily Life. Nuance notes explain the difference between similar words (e.g., "urgent" vs. "pressing" vs. "critical" vs. "imperative")
  • Spaced repetition review — words you've learned resurface at optimal intervals based on your recall ratings, building long-term retention without manual scheduling
  • Varied exercises — Context Clue, Nuance Pick, Usage Check, and Quick Drill modes test understanding in different ways, not just rote memorization
  • Progress tracking — daily streaks, mastery levels (Learning / Familiar / Mastered), domain coverage heatmap, and milestone badges make your progress visible

First Launch

When you open the app for the first time, an anonymous session is created silently — you land directly on the Today tab with no sign-up screen. A tooltip appears explaining the three daily options. You can start learning your first cluster immediately.

To save your progress across devices or back it up, create a free account from the Profile tab at any time. All your existing progress carries over with zero data loss.

Your Daily Session

The Today tab is your home base. Each day it shows:

  1. Suggested cluster — a new cluster to learn based on your current progress
  2. Review queue — words due for spaced repetition review today (count shown)
  3. Quick Drill — a 3-minute rapid-fire exercise mixing all exercise types

A typical session: start with the review queue to clear overdue words, then learn the new suggested cluster. Total time: 8–15 minutes.

Learning a Word Cluster

  1. Tap the suggested cluster card on the Today tab
  2. Read each word: definition, 2–3 usage examples, and nuance notes comparing near-synonyms
  3. Complete the exercises at the bottom — fill-in-the-blank and matching questions
  4. Tap Complete Cluster — the words enter your spaced repetition schedule

The Library

The Library tab shows all available word clusters organized by domain and difficulty. Difficulty levels unlock progressively: complete 2 Beginner clusters in a domain to unlock Intermediate; complete 2 Intermediate to unlock Advanced. Locked clusters are visible but grayed out with their unlock requirements shown.

Use the search bar to find a specific word or cluster by name — useful when you encounter an unfamiliar word in the wild and want to find its cluster.

The Basic Subscription adds cloud sync (streak and mastery carry across your phone and tablet) and AI Writing Suggestions (paste any text and the app suggests more precise replacements from your learned vocabulary).

Building the Habit

  • Pick a consistent time — morning before email works well; so does a lunch break or evening
  • Start with domains that feel immediately useful (Work clusters for professional writers; Emotions clusters for creative writers)
  • The Quick Drill is designed for days with only 3 minutes — it still counts toward your streak
  • When you encounter an unfamiliar word in the wild, search the Library to find its cluster
