Getting Started with The Structured Musician
The Structured Musician is a cross-platform app (iOS, Android, Web) that gives independent musicians a structured framework for defining, tracking, and improving their creative and business workflows. Instead of working differently on every song, you define repeatable processes — songwriting, recording, release, marketing — and track each project through those stages. Over time, the app shows you where you get stuck, how fast you're improving, and what your process actually looks like in practice.
What the App Does
Most musicians develop effective processes implicitly but never document them. The Structured Musician makes those processes explicit:
- Define processes: Create step-by-step workflows with named stages (e.g., Idea Capture → Draft → Arrangement → Recording → Mixing → Release)
- Track items: Add songs and albums, assign them to a process, and move them through stages as you work
- See your progress level: A five-stage system (Getting Started → Building Habits → Tracking → Analyzing → Mastering) shows your process maturity over time
- Spot bottlenecks: Automatic timing data reveals which stages slow you down without any manual time tracking
First Launch Steps
- Open the app — no account or sign-up required. An anonymous session starts silently on first launch.
- Watch the walkthrough — a 3-4 screen guided tour explains the core concept in plain language. You can skip it with the "Skip" button on any screen, but it's worth 90 seconds.
- Create your first process — tap "Create Your First Process" on the Dashboard. You can start from a pre-built template (Songwriting, Recording & Production, Mixing & Mastering, or Release & Marketing) or build from scratch. Each process needs at least 2 stages and supports up to 15.
- Add your first song — go to the Tracking tab, tap "Add Item," name your song, and assign it to your new process. The song starts at stage 1 automatically.
- Move it through stages — tap "Move to Next Stage" when you complete each phase of your work. The app captures a timestamp at every transition.
Key Screens
| Tab | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Dashboard | Shows your progress level for each process, quick stats (items in progress, completed this month), and timing insights once you have data |
| Processes | Lists your process templates — create, edit, import templates, and manage stages |
| Tracking | Shows all active songs and albums with their current stage; tap any item to view its full timeline |
| Profile | Account status, settings, subscription management, analytics opt-out |
Free vs. Premium
Free (ad-supported): Full access to process creation, item tracking, stage transitions, timing data, progress assessments, and the Dashboard. Ads appear at the bottom of main tabs and between stage transitions (frequency-capped). All data is stored locally — works offline.
Ad-free (one-time purchase): Removes all ads. Requires creating an account.
Plus subscription: Adds cloud sync across your devices, advanced analytics (bottleneck charts, velocity metrics), and curated process templates from professional workflows. Requires an account.
Pro subscription: Reserved for future capabilities including cross-process comparison analytics. Kofi, one of our power-user personas, unlocks Pro when the Plus analytics become insufficient for his client meetings.
Creating an Account
You never have to create an account to use the core features. When you're ready to sync across devices or remove ads, tap Profile → Create Account. Sign in with Google, Apple, or a magic link (email). Your existing data carries over — nothing is lost when you upgrade from anonymous to a real account.
