How to Access Crisis Resources
Renata, a 38-year-old elementary school teacher, has been using Grief Companion for two months after the stillbirth of her daughter. Some nights are manageable. Some nights are not. On the nights that aren't, Renata needs to get to help quickly — without signing in again, without navigating menus, without a paywall.
Grief Companion keeps crisis resources one tap away, visible on every screen, available without any additional steps.
If you are in immediate danger, please call 911 or your local emergency services. The resources below are for emotional crisis support.
Crisis Resources Are Always Visible
You do not need to search for crisis support. The crisis resource banner is permanently displayed at the top of your dashboard and cannot be dismissed or hidden. It reads simply:
If you need immediate support, help is here.
This banner is visible whether you are logged in or not. It does not disappear after onboarding. It is not buried in a settings menu.
Steps
1. See the persistent banner on your dashboard
Every time you open the app, the crisis resource banner is visible near the top of the dashboard screen. It appears before your journal prompts, before your check-in summary, before everything else.
2. Tap "I need help now"
Tap the banner or the button labeled I need help now. The app responds immediately — there is no loading screen, no confirmation dialog, no additional questions.
3. Complete the grounding exercise
The first thing you see is a simple grounding exercise. This is not a questionnaire. It is a brief technique designed to bring your attention to the present moment:
Name 5 things you can see. Name 4 things you can touch. Name 3 things you can hear. Name 2 things you can smell. Name 1 thing you can taste.
Work through each item at your own pace. There is no timer. You can spend a minute or ten — whatever the moment requires.
4. See direct links to crisis lines
Below the grounding exercise, you'll find two direct-contact options:
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — Tap to call directly. This opens your phone's dialer with 988 pre-filled. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Crisis Text Line — Tap to open a text message with the number 741741 pre-filled and the word HOME in the message body. Send it, and a trained crisis counselor will respond.
Both options are one tap. No copy-pasting, no memorizing numbers.
5. Dismiss the screen when you're ready
There is no forced path through this screen. When you are ready to leave, tap I'm okay for now or simply use your device's back button. You are returned to wherever you were before.
Nothing is logged about whether you used these resources. There are no follow-up notifications. The app does not ask how you're feeling after you dismiss the screen.
What to Expect
Crisis resources appear instantly. There is no paywall on this screen — it is available on the Free tier, the Plus tier, and the Pro tier without exception. There is no login requirement.
The grounding exercise is optional — if you want to go straight to the phone number or text line, you can scroll past it immediately. The contact options are visible as soon as the screen loads.
Grief Companion treats crisis support as infrastructure, not a feature. It is always there. You never have to look for it.
If You Need More Than This App Can Offer
This app is a companion, not a therapist. If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm, please reach out to the 988 Lifeline or Crisis Text Line, go to your nearest emergency room, or call someone you trust.
Grief is not something you have to carry alone.
