Ray — Casual Player (Free to Plus Upgrade)

Tier: Free → Plus (upgrade journey) Platform: iOS Word focus: 2-letter, 3-letter (branching out)

Background

Ray is easygoing and spontaneous — he opens the app whenever he's bored in a waiting room. He didn't mind ads at first but started finding them grating after three weeks of daily use. The upgrade felt like buying a coffee — small enough not to overthink. He was on Free tier for 19 days before upgrading.

How He Uses the App

Ray started with 2-letter recognition drills and is now branching into 3-letter words — he recently learned ZAP, ZEP, and ZIT are all valid. His sessions vary wildly: some days three 4-minute sessions, some days nothing. His streak record is 11 days. He has 58% mastery on 2-letter words and 29% on 3-letter words. He hasn't tried hooks or bingos yet.

Tier Upgrade Journey

An ad loaded slowly and froze the app mid-drill. Ray's reaction was mild annoyance rather than outrage — but enough to make the upgrade decision immediate. He completed the account creation and purchase flow in under 2 minutes. Ads disappeared; he was back drilling.

What He Values

  • Frictionless experience — anything that interrupts his casual drilling sessions is a friction point
  • Spontaneous use that doesn't require planning or commitment
  • Short sessions that fit wherever he is
  • An upgrade that felt proportionate (cheap, quick, worthwhile)
