Marcus — AC-02

Age: Late 30s Platform: iOS (free → upgrading to Plus) Status: Active user, 3 weeks in

Who He Is

Marcus is a recently divorced father. The divorce itself doesn't haunt him as much as the guilt about his kids — the worry that the disruption has hurt them in ways he can't repair. He came to the app through a therapist recommendation and has taken to it more intensely than he expected.

He is spontaneous where Priya is methodical. He doesn't have a fixed daily practice time. He opens the app when his inner critic spikes, which can happen at 11 PM on a Sunday or in a parking lot on a Wednesday afternoon. His usage is emotionally-driven rather than schedule-driven.

How He Uses the App

Marcus's most common use case is the Compassion Break, triggered by guilt rather than routine. He's noticed his usage spikes on Wednesdays — custody transition days, when he drops the kids off and has a few hours alone with his thoughts. The Common Humanity Reflection practice is his favorite in the library. He says it's the step that feels most true: knowing other parents feel this way helps more than the self-kindness step, which still feels awkward to him.

He has written 23 journal entries in three weeks, an unusually high volume. Most are about parenting — specific moments where he thinks he said the wrong thing, or missed something. The guided reframing has helped him see his self-criticism more clearly without spiraling into it.

He recently picked up a tablet and wants his journal entries accessible on both devices. That triggered the upgrade decision.

What He Needs from the App

  • Immediate access: When his inner critic spikes, he needs the Compassion Break available in two taps. Any friction between distress and the practice reduces its value.
  • Journal reliability: He has 23 entries he doesn't want to lose. Sync must work reliably and the entries must transfer completely on upgrade.
  • Cross-device continuity: His phone is for the moments; his tablet is for longer reflection. Both need the same journal.

Design Implications

Marcus is the core case for Compassion Breaks being one tap from the Home screen. If the button were buried under a menu or required navigation, he would use the app less during the moments it matters most.

His journal volume also tests the app's performance at the upper range of typical use. Twenty-three entries with guided reframing responses means the journal list must scroll and load efficiently.

Wednesday usage spikes are useful signal for reminder logic — suggesting that contextual nudges (rather than fixed-time reminders) might serve this persona better in a future version.
