How to Search and Filter Your Recipe Collection
Vijay, a software engineer, has 89 recipes organized into collections. Every Sunday he needs to quickly find weeknight recipes under 45 minutes from specific cuisines. With search and filters, he finds exactly what he needs in seconds.
Searching by Keyword
- Open the Recipes tab
- Tap the search bar at the top
- Type any part of the recipe name, ingredient, or tag
- Results appear within 300ms as you type
- Tap a recipe card to open it
Filtering by Cuisine, Cook Time, or Tags
- Open the Recipes tab
- Tap the filter icon (or filter chips below the search bar)
- Select one or more filter criteria:
- Cuisine (Italian, Indian, Thai, etc.)
- Cook time (Under 20 min, Under 30 min, Under 45 min)
- Tags (any custom tag you've applied to recipes)
- Favorites only
- Tap Apply — the collection view updates to show matching recipes
- Active filters appear as chips below the search bar
- Tap the X on any chip to remove that filter, or tap Clear All
Switching Between Grid and List View
Tap the view toggle (top right of the Recipes tab) to switch between grid view (photos prominent) and list view (more recipes visible at once with details). Both views support search and filters.
Expected Outcome
Your filtered collection shows only matching recipes. Vijay filters for "Indian" cuisine and "Under 45 min" cook time and finds 4 recipes. He taps one to open it, then navigates back to the filtered results (filter state is preserved).
Tips
- Combine search with filters — type "chicken" and also apply an "Under 30 min" filter
- The search bar works offline against your locally stored recipes
- If you have collections set up (e.g., "Weeknight Fast," "Weekend Projects"), you can browse them directly from the collection selector above the recipe grid
- Tags you added during import or manual entry make filtering more powerful — the more consistently you tag, the better search and filter work
