How to Complete Your First Story Recall Exercise

Nadia, a 32-year-old occupational therapist recovering from a cycling accident, approaches her cognitive rehabilitation with the same structured discipline she brings to her patients. Her first exercise was the turning point — she saw immediately that the app provided measurable, repeatable practice. This guide walks through the complete exercise loop from start to session summary.

What You Need

  • Cognitive Stories installed and open
  • Microphone permission (the app will request it during your first exercise)
  • A few minutes of quiet time — the exercise takes 4–6 minutes

Steps

1. Start the Exercise

From the Home tab, tap Start Exercise. If this is your very first session, the Home tab will show a "No exercises yet" state with a prominent Start button.

2. Read the Story

A story appears on screen with a reading timer displayed at the top. The default difficulty is Medium (8–10 facts). Read the story carefully — take as long as you need. The timer is a guideline, not a deadline.

When you feel ready, tap I'm ready to proceed.

3. Grant Microphone Permission

On your first exercise, the app requests microphone access. Grant permission — without it, voice retelling is not possible. (If you deny it, you can still use the text fallback to type your retelling.)

4. Retell Round 1

The story disappears and a voice recording screen appears. Speak your retelling of the story aloud in your own words — you do not need to use the exact wording from the story. Real-time transcription appears on screen as you speak.

When you are done, tap Done.

5. See Your Round 1 Results

The results screen shows:

  • Facts found (green) — facts from the story that appeared in your retelling
  • Facts missed (red) — facts that were not captured

Review the results. Take note of which facts you missed.

6. Complete Rounds 2, 3, and 4

Tap Next Round to try again. You retell the same story again — your accuracy usually improves with each attempt as the story structure becomes more familiar.

After each round, you see the updated fact-found/missed breakdown.

7. View Your Session Summary

After Round 4, the session summary screen shows your accuracy percentage for each of the 4 attempts. For example: 32% → 48% → 61% → 68%. This progression within a session is normal and expected.

Your session is saved automatically.

Expected Outcome

You have completed one full story recall exercise. Your session appears in the Progress tab session history list. The Home tab now shows your streak (Day 1) and your last session's best accuracy.

Tips

  • Do not worry about your first score — it typically ranges from 30% to 60% for new users and improves consistently over weeks of practice.
  • If voice input feels difficult, switch to text fallback by tapping the keyboard icon on the retelling screen.
  • You do not have to complete all 4 rounds in one sitting, but finishing all 4 gives you the most useful practice data.
