How to Use Text Fallback Instead of Voice

Devon, a former college rugby player recovering from a concussion, has high-fatigue days where voice retelling feels too demanding. He has used text fallback in 4 of his 11 sessions — it lets him keep his daily practice going without the additional effort of speaking aloud. Text fallback is a first-class feature: it is scored identically to voice input.

When to Use Text Fallback

  • On high-fatigue days when voice feels draining
  • When you are in a public place or quiet environment where speaking is not practical
  • When you want to slow down and think carefully about your retelling before committing
  • As a comparison to see if your accuracy differs between typed and spoken retellings

Steps

  1. Start an exercise and read the story as normal.

  2. On the retelling screen, look for the keyboard icon or a "Type instead" option below the microphone button. Tap it to switch from voice to text input.

  3. Type your retelling in the text field that appears. Write out the story in your own words, including as many facts as you can remember. There is no time limit.

  4. Tap Done when finished. The scoring engine processes your typed text and shows the same fact-found/missed breakdown as voice retelling.

  5. Continue rounds 2–4 using text or switch back to voice for subsequent rounds — you can mix input methods across rounds within the same session.

Expected Outcome

Your typed retelling is scored using the same fact-matching engine as voice input. The results screen shows facts found and missed the same way. Your session summary reflects all 4 rounds regardless of which input method you used.

Notes

  • Switching between voice and text within a session is fully supported.
  • The scoring engine is calibrated for natural language — you do not need to write in full sentences or formal prose.
  • Text fallback does not count as a "lower quality" session — it appears identically in your session history and Progress chart.
