Frequently Asked Questions

What is Memoryish?

Memoryish is a personal memory archive app for iOS and Android. It's designed for capturing stories from any point in your life — not just recent events — with support for fuzzy dates (approximate timeframes like "sometime in spring 1995"), fuzzy locations (geographic areas rather than exact coordinates), and links to the people, places, and things in each memory.

Do I need an exact date to save a memory?

No. The "whenish" date picker lets you choose a descriptor such as "sometime in spring," "early in the year," or "around the holidays," paired with just a year. Your memory is placed at an approximate position on the Timeline so it feels right without requiring precision you don't have.

What is the Whereline?

The Whereline is a world map that shows pins at the locations associated with your memories. You can pan and zoom, tap a pin to preview the memory, and tap again to open it. Locations use the "whereish" picker — you specify a geographic level (continent, country, state/region, or city) rather than an exact address.

What are People, Places, Things, and Tags?

These are entity types you can create and link to your memories:

  • People — Individuals who appear in your memories. Add a name, description, and tags. Tap a person's profile to see every memory linked to them in chronological order.
  • Places — Locations organized in a geographic hierarchy (continent → country → state/region → city). Places appear as pins on the Whereline.
  • Things — Objects, books, pets, cars, or anything else that has meaning in your stories.
  • Tags — Free-form labels that can be applied to memories, people, places, and things alike. A tag's page shows every entity linked to it.

What is Prompt Me?

Prompt Me suggests a memory prompt tailored to your interests (set during onboarding). When you tap it, the editor opens with the prompt as context. Write your response and save — Memoryish stores both the prompt and your memory. You can also browse the full prompt library via the Prompts tile on your dashboard.

What are Journeys?

Journeys are collections of memories you group into a narrative arc — for example, "Teaching Years (1985–2020)" or "Living in Bangkok." You give a journey a title and description, then add existing memories to it. On the Timeline, you can filter to show only the memories in a specific journey.

What is the Category Tree?

The Category Tree organizes prompts into a three-level hierarchy (for example: People → Family → Parents). Browse and expand the tree to find prompts in specific areas of life. Writing a memory through a category path links it to that category, making it easier to find thematically later.

How does search work?

From the Memories list, tap the search/filter icon. You can combine three filters simultaneously using AND logic:

  • Text — searches titles and body text
  • Person — filter to memories linked to a specific person
  • Date range — a start year and end year

All active filters must match for a memory to appear.

Can I export my memories?

Yes. Tap the Export tile from the dashboard.

  • JSON export — a complete archive of all memories, entities, relationships, and metadata. Use it as a backup or to migrate your data. Available on all tiers (Free tier has a monthly export limit).
  • PDF memory book — a formatted document with a title page, table of contents, and one page per memory. You can export all memories or filter by journey. PDF export requires Plus or Pro.

What is AI Import?

AI Import (Pro only) lets you paste a block of text — such as a journal page or letter — and have the app extract multiple memories from it automatically. Each extracted memory is pre-filled with a title, approximate date, location, and linked persons. You review and edit before saving. This is useful for digitizing old handwritten journals.

What happens if I reach a Plus or Pro feature on Free?

A clear, non-aggressive dialog explains what the feature does and the cost to unlock it. You can tap "Upgrade" to subscribe or "Maybe Later" to dismiss. Your Free features are never blocked.

Does Memoryish work offline?

Yes. Memoryish is offline-first. You can capture, browse, search, and edit memories without an internet connection. Your changes sync automatically when connectivity is restored. The app detects and resolves sync conflicts automatically.

Is my data private?

Yes. Your memories are stored in your personal account and never shared with other users. You can export a complete copy of your data at any time via the JSON export. Deleting your account permanently removes all associated data.

How do I change my language?

Go to Settings → Language. Memoryish supports English (en), Spanish (es), Hindi (hi), Portuguese (pt), and Japanese (ja). The entire UI switches immediately after selection, including prompts, labels, and VoiceOver announcements.

How do I change text size?

Go to Settings → Profile → Font Scale. You can scale text up to 200% of the system default. Changes take effect immediately across all screens without a restart.

App Startup and Loading

App stuck on splash screen? The loading screen normally clears in under 5 seconds while the app initializes your local database and checks for sync. If it takes longer:

  • Tap the Retry button that appears after 10 seconds
  • Force-close the app and reopen it
  • Check that the app is up to date in the App Store or Google Play
  • Check your internet connection (required for first launch and sync, not required after)

If the issue persists, contact support from Settings → Help & Feedback.

How do I report a bug or request a feature?

Go to Settings → Help & Feedback. You can submit a bug report (with an optional screenshot) or a feature request. Both are reviewed by the Memoryish team.
