How to Export Your Practice Data
Who this is for: Plus subscribers who want to download a complete record of their self-compassion practice — useful for personal review, professional use, or sharing data with a therapist or researcher.
Ruth is the director of a university counseling center who uses the app herself and piloted it with 30 students. She exports data three times per year to include in her department's annual report on student wellness program outcomes.
Steps
-
Open the app and navigate to Settings. Settings is accessible from the Home screen via the gear icon or profile menu.
-
Find the Export Data option. Within Settings, look for Privacy > Export Data or a standalone Export Data option. Tap it to open the export screen.
-
Select CSV format. The export format selector defaults to CSV. CSV is compatible with Excel, Numbers, Google Sheets, and most data analysis tools. Confirm CSV is selected.
-
Tap "Export." The app generates your export file. This includes:
- Practice history: date, practice name, duration (minutes), pillar (Self-Kindness / Common Humanity / Mindfulness), completion status
- Journal entries: date, self-critical thought text, guided prompt responses (if any), compassionate response text, emotional intensity rating (1–5), tags
- Mood check-ins: date, time, self-criticism score (1–5), self-compassion score (1–5), overall mood score (1–5), linked practice (if check-in followed a practice)
-
Wait for the file to download. The export generates in under 5 seconds for typical data volumes. A progress indicator appears briefly during generation.
-
Access the downloaded file. The file is delivered to:
- Android: Downloads folder (accessible via Files app or your file manager)
- iOS: Files app (you can AirDrop, email, or save to iCloud from there)
- Web: Direct browser download to your downloads folder
-
Open the file in your preferred tool. Double-click the CSV to open it in your default spreadsheet app, or import it manually. The file is structured with one row per event and labeled column headers — no additional formatting is required to read it.
Expected Outcome
A CSV file containing your complete practice history, journal entries, and mood check-in records is downloaded to your device. The file is fully readable in standard spreadsheet software. The export is complete in under 5 seconds.
Notes
- Plus tier only. Data export requires an active Plus subscription. If you are on the free tier, this option will not appear in Settings or will prompt you to upgrade.
- Your data stays yours. The exported file is a copy of your personal data. It is not uploaded to or processed by Edgeless or any third party as part of the export process. The file lives only on your device after download.
- For professionals and researchers. The CSV format is suitable for analysis in Excel, Python (pandas), R, or any data tool. Journal entry text is included as plain text. Researchers should note that this is individual self-report data and should be used accordingly.
- Export does not delete data. Exporting your data does not modify or remove anything from the app. Your practice history, journal, and mood data remain intact and accessible after export.
- For annual or periodic reviews. If you're using export for a periodic report (as Ruth does), you can export at any time — all historical data is included in each export, not just the current period. Filter by date in your spreadsheet after export.
- Privacy note. Journal entries contain personal reflections on self-critical thoughts. Handle exported files with the same care you'd give any personal health record, particularly if using the data in a professional context.
