How to Read Educational Content About Self-Compassion

Who this is for: Users who want to deepen their understanding of the research behind self-compassion — including professionals who use the app as a reference alongside their clinical or educational work.

Ruth is the director of a university counseling center who piloted Self-Compassion with 30 students last semester. She uses the educational content herself as a daily professional touchstone and evaluates articles for potential reference when speaking with students and colleagues.

Steps

  1. Open the app and find the Learn section. From the Home screen, look for the Learn card — typically positioned in the lower portion of the Home screen. Tap it to open the educational content section. Alternatively, some article categories may be accessible from a dedicated tab or menu depending on your device and OS.

  2. Browse articles by category. Articles are organized into categories that reflect the breadth of the self-compassion framework:

    • Kristin Neff's Research — articles about the foundational science, key studies, and what the research shows
    • Understanding the Three Pillars — deep dives into self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness as distinct skills
    • Common Myths — addressing misconceptions (self-compassion is not self-pity, weakness, or self-indulgence)
    • Practices and Techniques — how the app's exercises connect to the underlying theory
    • Self-Compassion in Daily Life — applying the framework to work, relationships, grief, and stress
  3. Select an article you haven't read. Unread articles appear without a checkmark. Tap any article title to open it.

  4. Read at your own pace. Articles are typically 400–800 words, written to be accessible without clinical training while being accurate enough for professionals. Sources and references to Neff's work are noted where relevant.

  5. Close the article when finished. The article is automatically marked as read in the list — you'll see a checkmark next to the title the next time you browse the category.

  6. Return to browse more. Navigate back to the category list to select another article, or return to the Home screen.

Expected Outcome

The article is read and marked as read in the library. Your reading history accumulates over time — you can easily see which articles you've covered and which are new.

Notes

  • All users have access. Educational content is available on both the free tier and Plus. No subscription is needed to read the research articles.
  • Content is research-backed. Articles are grounded in Dr. Kristin Neff's published research and the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) curriculum developed with Dr. Christopher Germer. Claims in the articles correspond to peer-reviewed findings.
  • For clinicians and educators. The content is intentionally written at a level appropriate for both general users and professionals. If you're a therapist, counselor, or educator, you'll find the articles usable as reading recommendations for clients or students, or as a personal reference.
  • Articles do not replace clinical training. The app's educational content is a supplement, not a substitute for Mindful Self-Compassion certification, graduate training, or clinical supervision.
  • Content updates. New articles are added over time as the app's content library grows. Check back periodically — the category list will show unread articles when new content has been added.
