How to Set Up Daily Practice Reminders
Who this is for: Users who want to build a consistent practice habit by setting a daily reminder — especially those whose usage is sporadic and who want a regular nudge to practice.
Tomás is a college student whose self-compassion practice clusters around stressful weeks (midterms, difficult feedback from professors) and then disappears during quiet periods. He wants to practice more consistently but needs a reminder to bridge the gap between intention and action.
Steps
-
Open the app and navigate to Settings. Settings is typically accessible from the Home screen via a gear icon or a profile button in the top corner.
-
Find the Daily Reminder section. Within Settings, locate the Daily Reminder option. Tap it to open the reminder configuration screen.
-
Enable the reminder. Toggle the reminder switch to On. If the app does not yet have notification permissions, your operating system will prompt you to allow notifications:
- iOS: Tap Allow when the "Self-Compassion Would Like to Send You Notifications" prompt appears.
- Android 13+: Tap Allow when the system notification permission prompt appears.
If you previously denied notification permissions, you'll need to enable them manually in your device Settings (see the note below).
-
Set a reminder time. Use the time picker to select when you want to be reminded each day. Choose a time that fits naturally into your daily routine — before a class, after lunch, before bed, or during a natural pause in your day.
-
Select which days the reminder fires. Toggle on the days of the week when you want the reminder. You can set it for every day, weekdays only, or any custom combination. If your schedule varies, setting it for all seven days gives you the most consistent nudge.
-
Set a weekly practice goal (optional). If a weekly goal setting is available, select a target number of practices per week (e.g., 5 out of 7 days). This goal appears on the Progress tab as context for your habit calendar — how many days you've practiced vs. your target for the week.
-
See the confirmation. After saving your settings, the app confirms the reminder is scheduled. The reminder is stored locally on your device — it does not require an internet connection to fire.
Expected Outcome
A daily reminder is scheduled at your chosen time on your chosen days. The reminder fires locally via your device's notification system, even without a network connection. No account or subscription is required.
Notes
- Reminders are local. Self-Compassion reminders use your device's local notification system. They are not sent from a server. This means they work on budget Android phones (including the Galaxy A14) even with unreliable network coverage, as long as notifications are enabled for the app.
- Do Not Disturb. If your device has Do Not Disturb or Focus mode scheduled, reminders during those periods may be silenced. Check your DND schedule if reminders aren't arriving.
- Battery optimization (Android). Some Android manufacturers restrict background processes to save battery. If your reminder isn't arriving, check your battery optimizer settings and set the Self-Compassion app to "unrestricted" or "no optimization."
- Manually re-enabling notifications. If you denied notification permissions and the app can no longer prompt you:
- iOS: Go to Settings > Notifications > Self-Compassion and toggle Allow Notifications to On.
- Android: Go to Settings > Apps > Self-Compassion > Notifications and enable notifications.
- No account required. Reminders work entirely on the free tier without signing in. They are tied to the device, not to an account.
