How to Upgrade to Plus for Web-to-Phone Sync

Who this is for: Users who use the Self-Compassion web version at their desk and want their journal entries and practice history to appear on their phone — requiring a Plus subscription to enable cross-device sync.

Keiko uses the app on her work computer during lunch, where she has a proper keyboard and a few quiet minutes. In the evenings, she prefers to read and reflect on her phone. Without Plus, these are two completely separate sessions with no connection between them.

Steps

  1. Open the web version of the app. Navigate to the Self-Compassion app in your browser. Sign in or create an account if you haven't already — an account is required for Plus sync to work.

  2. Look for the sync prompt in Settings. Open Settings from the top menu or profile icon. Look for "Continue on your phone" or "Sync your data across devices" — a prompt that explains what Plus sync enables.

  3. Tap "Upgrade to Plus." This opens the subscription screen showing the benefits of Plus:

    • Cross-device sync (journal entries, practice history, mood data)
    • Full practice library (all exercises unlocked)
    • Ad-free experience
  4. Select a plan. Choose between the monthly plan and the annual plan. The annual plan typically offers a lower per-month cost. Both include full Plus features immediately.

  5. Complete the purchase. On web, the purchase flow routes through your browser. You may be asked to sign in to the App Store or Google Play depending on your account type, or to use a web payment method if that's how the app handles web subscriptions. Complete the payment step.

  6. Return to the app. Your subscription status updates to Plus. The app may prompt you to reload or force-close and reopen.

  7. Confirm sync is active. In Settings, your account status should now show as Plus. Cross-device sync is enabled automatically — no additional toggle is needed.

  8. Start a journal entry on the web. Open the Journal tab and begin a new entry. Write your self-critical thought and a partial or complete compassionate response.

  9. Save the entry. Tap Save. The entry is saved and queued for sync.

  10. Open the app on your phone. Sign in with the same account. The journal entry you started on your computer appears on your phone, complete and intact.

  11. Continue or complete the entry on your phone. If you left the entry partially written, you can add to it from your phone. Any edits sync back.

Expected Outcome

Plus is active. Journal entries and practice history written on the web version sync automatically to your phone and vice versa. The experience is seamless — pick up on one device, continue on another.

Notes

  • Same account on both devices. Sync only works when you're signed in with the same account (Google or Apple) on both devices. If you see different data on each device, check that the account email matches in Settings on both.
  • Sync is near-real-time. After saving on web, the entry typically appears on your phone within 30 seconds when both devices are connected. If you're offline on either end, sync queues and completes when connectivity resumes.
  • Ads disappear immediately. Banner ads on the Home and Practice list are removed as soon as your Plus subscription activates. There's no need to restart the app.
  • Existing journal entries migrate. Any journal entries already on your free-tier devices are included in the first sync. Nothing is lost — all local data is merged into the synced account.
  • Web subscription billing. If you subscribed from the web browser rather than from the iOS or Android app, billing may go through a web payment processor rather than App Store or Google Play. Manage your subscription from Settings > Account > Subscription or from your payment provider's dashboard.
