How to Track Budget and Costs for a Goal

Who this is for: Anyone planning a goal that has real financial costs — travel, experiences, equipment, or education.

Marcus, a systematic software developer, wants to track the budget for "Learn to sail" — including the ASA 101 course, sailing gear, and marina fees.

Steps

  1. Open the item you want to budget (e.g., "Learn to sail").
  2. Navigate to the budget section in the item detail view.
  3. Set an estimated budget. Tap the estimated budget field and enter your target amount (e.g., $3,200). Currency formatting follows your device locale.
  4. Add cost line items. Tap "Add Cost" and enter a label and amount:
    • "ASA 101 course" — $850
    • "Sailing gear" — $400
    • "Marina dock fees" — $150
  5. View the summary. The budget section shows: estimated budget $3,200, total actual cost $1,400, remaining $1,800.
  6. Add more costs as you incur them. The summary updates in real-time.

Expected Outcome

A running total of your estimated vs actual spending for this goal. The summary makes it easy to see whether you're on track, under, or over budget.

Tips

  • Currency formatting follows your device locale — no need to set a currency manually.
  • Sort your main list by estimated budget (via the sort icon) to see which goals are the most financially significant.
  • Budget data syncs offline with the rest of the item — you can add costs without a connection.
  • Cost line items can be edited or deleted by tapping them in the budget section.
