How to Browse and Import Starter Presets

Jess wants to try a larger board without having to figure out all the settings herself. Big Bad Words ships with a set of curated starter presets that cover the most popular configurations — she can browse them, preview the settings, and import one with a single tap.

What Are Starter Presets?

Starter presets are pre-built game configurations curated by the Big Bad Words team. They're different from your personal saved presets: starter presets are read-only and always available, even if you've never configured a game before. They're a great starting point for trying new configurations without guessing at settings.

A "Classic" preset ships with the app by default (15×15, 7 tiles, standard bonus, no timer). Additional starter presets cover common play styles.

How to Browse Starter Presets

  1. Tap New Game on the Play tab.
  2. On the game setup screen, tap Load Preset.
  3. The preset picker shows two sections:
    • My Presets — configurations you've saved yourself
    • Starter Presets — curated presets built into the app
  4. Scroll through the Starter Presets section. Each preset shows its name and a summary of its key settings (board size, timer, mechanics).
  5. Tap a preset to see its full configuration — all settings are shown before you apply it.
  6. Tap Use This Preset to apply the configuration to your game setup. All settings fill in immediately.
  7. Adjust any individual setting if you want to tweak it, then tap Start Game.

Saving a Starter Preset as Your Own

If you like a starter preset but want to modify it, apply it and make your changes, then tap Save Preset with a new name. This creates a personal copy in your My Presets section that you can edit freely without affecting the original starter preset.
