How to Play a Family Pass-and-Play Game

Who this is for: Two or more players sharing one device — family game nights, partners, kids.

Jess wants to play with her partner on one phone using the Clean word list so it's family-appropriate.

Steps

  1. Tap "New Game" on the Play tab.
  2. Add Player 2. Tap the "+ Add Player" option in game setup. Enter a name and choose a color for Player 2.
  3. Select the word list. Change the word list dropdown to "Clean" to use the family-safe vocabulary.
  4. Tap "Start Game." The game begins — Player 1's tiles are shown.
  5. Play Player 1's turn. Place tiles and tap "Play" to submit the word.
  6. Hand off the device. After confirming your move, a hand-off screen appears: "Pass to [Player 2's name]" with their chosen color. Player 1's tiles are hidden.
  7. Player 2 taps "Ready." Their tile hand appears — Player 1's tiles are never visible during this transition.
  8. Play Player 2's turn. Repeat the turn cycle.
  9. View the scoreboard at any time — it shows both players' running scores throughout the game.
  10. Game ends with a rankings screen: "Player 1 Wins! 127–98" (or equivalent).

Expected Outcome

Smooth turn transitions with complete tile privacy between players. Both players' scores tracked correctly. The game ends with a clear winner.

Tips

  • You can have 2–4 human players in pass-and-play mode. AI opponents can fill any remaining slots.
  • The Clean word list filters out inappropriate words, making it safe for children.
  • Player names and colors are set per-game — they don't need to be the same every time.
