Play Big Bad Words with Motor Accessibility Settings

Sam has mild carpal tunnel and plays on an iPhone SE — a smaller screen where small tap targets are hard to hit precisely. Big Bad Words is designed for tap-only interaction with no fine motor precision or long-press gestures required anywhere in the app.

Large Touch Targets

Enable Large Touch Targets in your device's Accessibility settings (iOS: Settings → Accessibility → Touch; Android: Settings → Accessibility → Interaction and dexterity). Big Bad Words reads this setting and renders with extra spacing between tiles and larger tap areas on interactive elements.

With large touch targets enabled:

  • Tiles in your rack have extra spacing between them.
  • Board cells respond to a generous tap area, not just the exact center.
  • Buttons (Play, Exchange, Pass) are prominently sized for easy tapping.

Tap-Only Interaction

Every action in Big Bad Words can be completed with a single tap — no drag-and-drop, no long-press, no multi-finger gestures required:

ActionHow to do it

Place a tileTap the destination board cell
Deselect a tileTap the selected tile again
Play your wordTap the Play button
Exchange tilesTap Exchange, then tap tiles to select, then tap Confirm
Pass turnTap Pass

Smaller Board for Easier Navigation

On small screens, a 15×15 board can feel crowded. Consider starting with an 11×11 board — it's more comfortable to navigate with large touch targets and still gives a full word-game experience.

Set board size in game configuration (tap New Game → Board Size slider).

No Long-Press Required

Long-press gestures are not used anywhere in Big Bad Words. Tile selection, word placement, exchange, and all menus are accessible with standard taps only.

Tips for Comfortable Play

  • Use the Shuffle button on your rack to re-sort tiles and spot words without needing to drag them around.
  • Enable Assist Scoring in game config to see a running score as you place tiles — you'll know your word is valid before tapping Play.
  • If a tap misses, simply tap again — the board tolerates multiple taps and only registers the last placement before you confirm with Play.
